About us

The Botanic Gardens Action Group was set up in the summer of 2008 as a result of meetings organised by Sefton Leisure Services Department.

There had been a ‘Friends of Botanic Gardens Group’ for several years but it had lost impetus and membership had dwindled. The new group started with representatives of ‘stakeholders’, that is people who had a direct interest in the park, such as concession holders, organisations such as the men’s Society, the Bowling Clubs, and the North Meols Civic Society.

At the first meeting Ken Bridge, Chairman of the North Meols Civic Society, was elected Chairman of the Action Group.  Councillor John Dodd, who had been nominated as ‘Park Champion on the Southport Area Committee of Sefton Council, was elected Vice – Chairman, and Christine Bradshaw, who was Secretary of the Southport Brass Band association was elected Secretary and Treasurer.  Representatives from Sefton Leisure Dept were Peter Campbell, Senior parks Officer, Community Development and Catherine Creeton, Community Development Officer.  Later Dave Thompson, Principle Parks Officer became the Portfolio Officer for several Southport Parks including Botanic Gardens and is now the senior link between the Group and the Council.

At the Group AGM in January 2009, an Executive Committee was formed with the Officers of the Group being joined by two committee members, John Sinclair and Michael Bond.

The Action Group meets at approximately two month intervals at Churchtown Junior School, Sunny Road, Churchtown, usually at 6.30pm on a Wednesday. See ‘News Items’ for dates.
